He sat in the rocking chair and thought. He thought of how they had met on that St. Patrick’s Day night so many years ago. He tried desperately to meet her but she wouldn’t bite on any of his lines. Throughout the entire night she would smile across the room at him and he would eventually make his way back to her, only to have her shoot him down again.
Finally as the night drew to an end and he was leaving, she came up to him, kissed him on the cheek, and slipped him a piece of paper with her phone number on it.
“I didn’t want you to think I was easy,” she said looking into his eyes.
They both stared for a few moments before she smiled and turned away. He stood there watching as she walked back to her friends, glancing back at him only once with a quick smile.
“Do you?” She asked him again bringing him back into a present state of mind. “Do you think of us the way I do?”
“Of course I do,” he said confidently, although deep within he just wasn’t sure.
He knew for sure this was a girl he could love, and who would certainly love him forever, but there was just that small doubt that crept in. What was it? Why could he not feel as confident about their love as she did?
“Then what is it?” She demanded of him again. “Because unless you tell me, this is it.”
He got up from his chair and walked toward her.
The path of love takes us in so many directions. It fills our minds and souls with so much emotion and thought. This short story is a continuation from “What Do You Think About?”
